Texas Redistricting Going to Supreme Court; Not a Good Year for Tom DeLay
Topic: Texas Politics

The redistricting of Texas helped the GOP, without a doubt. They gained extra seats in Congress because of it and seriously hurt Democratic fundraising. Now, the architect of the new district map, Tom DeLay, is watching as his morally compromised baby is taken to the Supreme Court, not only to check the validity of the redrawing, but mostly to see if it was Constitutional.
Ouch.
What's the main reason for looking at the new map? To see if the "one person, one vote" principle behind the United States constitution was skewed so that votes against Republicans wouldn't matter. So pretty much this turns out to be the worst year ever for Tom DeLay and the GOP. If the redistricting is overturned, it'll affect the 2006 election. Case goes to court on March 1, so in between there, expect to see a lot of claims hitting the Texas Republicans. Not that they don't deserve it or anything...

Gay Marriage Ban Passes in Texas; Apparently Only Straight People Are Allowed Marriage Tax Breaks
Topic: Texas Politics
Once again Texans showed their idiocy by voting to constitutionally ban gay marriage in the state. Because obviously they care. They don't know why they care, but they care. What this amendment comes down to is that Texans don't think gay people deserve a marriage tax break. Way to go rednecks.

Grand Jury Indict's DeLay's PAC! Something About Nursing Homes...
Topic: Texas Politics
U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's political action committee, Texans for a Republican Majority, was indicted today for illegally accepting a campaign donation of $100,000 from some retirees.
The Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care's donation has led to four indictments, including unlawful political advertising, unlawful contributions to a political committee and unlawful expenditures. Pretty much the worst things you can do on a PAC. No word on whether or not these charges will bring DeLay back into the spotlight, but we can say with a full heart, we hope so.

Dallas More Liberal Than Austin! Austinites are PISSED!!!
Topic: Texas Politics
A recent study by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research (housed in Berkeley, California) has released a study based on voting records from the 2004 elections showing Dallas as the 32nd most liberal city in America. Austin, the "Live Music Capital of the World," came in at 93. And now people in Austin, including lawmakers, are really pissed off.
"I would find it hard to believe that Austin is not in the top 25 or 30 liberal cities," said Travis County Republican Chairman Alan Sager.
Of course, that ^ came from the Republican Chairman, so anybody in anything but tighty whities would be a leftist to him.
"I think someone in Berkeley may be one toke over the line." - Democratic political consultant Mark Nathan.
So there you have it Texans. The argument is over. Guess we must change Austin's fad motto of "Keep Austin Weird" to "Hippies Don't Vote."

Lance Armstrong to Turn to Politics? Maybe he'll be the first respectable Texan to win a national office!
Topic: Texas Politics
After his record-setting 7th Tour de France win on Sunday, the world was a buzz with what Lance Armstrong would do next during his retirement. The 34-year-old would like to hang around with his kids, girlfriend Sheryl Crow and maybe even turn his focus towards politics. What? Yes, you read right, and no, we're not drinking.
"To me politics are about fighting for what you believe is right," he said. "I've always done that on the bike, on a purely sporting level, but also on another level."
Holy mother of sweet crap, that would be interesting. And oh yes, Armstrong likes to drink too. Of course he does... he's Texan.

DeLay Watch: Run for your life!
Topic: Texas Politics
Tom DeLay has realized the error of at least one of his ways and has begun the long apologetic process, which usually takes politicians the rest of their careers, or at least a book deal. Controversy began around Delay after he made comments during Schiavo-gate in which he said the judges who were allowing her to die should die themselves.
Now the embroiled Texas statesman is hoping that his apologies will stop his name from being in the news, which doesn't seem to be working.
"I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.
DeLay has also been accused of unethical practices regarding his re-election campaign, specifically where he received his moneys and how he spent them. Hookers and blow = a-okay. Giving to your family = no good son of a bitch. *sigh* We love the American people's judgement system...
