Tripod Insider

Vol. 2, No. 17

August 30, 1996

Welcome to another Tripod Insider -- your source for all things Tripod. This week we welcome a new employee, the volleyball team enters the playoffs, and the Insider explores the addictive nature of "tech." Tripod is also looking for a few good beta testers. Read more about it after the editors tell you about all that's new on Tripod.

TRIPOD BETA TESTERS

Tripod is looking for a few good beta testers to try out our new Chat service. We developed a Chat service that works with any browser and we need help to see if it's as easy as we think it is. If you are interested in taking part in our Chat Beta Test, we invite you to register.

Content And Services

WORK & MONEY
The Work & Money section is proud to welcome Beth Kobliner, best-selling author of "Get A Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your 20s and 30s" and contributing writer for MONEY magazine. Once a month, Beth's "Personal Money Matters" will be unveiling some short and smart tips for managing your money and plotting your financial future. The current entry shows you how to save money -- even when you think you don't have any to save! Elsewhere, the Dilemma helps a Tripod member determine fair wages for Internet work, the Survey queries reactions to the financial sense (or lack thereof) behind the Dole Tax Cut, and in the second part of an interview with Chic Simple's Jeff Stone, he considers the future of work clothes. The Work and Money section is getting down to business in style!

POLITICS & COMMUNITY
After all the over-hyped convention coverage, many of you must be tired of presidential politics. We are too, so we've shifted our focus this week to the regional and Congressional levels. Adam Glickman, Communications Director of the New Party, chats with Tripod about his party's local strategy, the problems with environmental politics, and the revival of "fusion," a controversial ballot tactic which allows minor parties a foothold in the two-party system. Political Playbook details the races to watch in the House and Senate and explains why they are significant. The weekly survey gives you a chance to slam your political opponents. Finally, we shift gears altogether with our review of "Joker, Joker, Deuce," Paul Beatty's second collection of poetry.

LIVING & TRAVEL
This week in Living & Travel, Jeff Stone, co-creator of the Chic Simple book series, speaks up for materialism and suggests that life is in the details. In our continuing homeopathy series, Steve offers remedies for allergies. (According to Doctor Bob, though many "traditional" doctors continue to be skeptical of homeopathy, allergies is one area where they admit homeopathic remedies to be the most effective.) Speaking of Doctor Bob, he's in, of course. This week: Is it safe to swallow semen? What do swollen feet mean? And finding the pill that's right for you. In the puzzler, diagnose a severe bee sting reaction, and in the survey, tell us your tips for avoiding trips to the doctor (no offense to Doctor Bob). Finally, in Tools for Thought, we review "The Modern Woman's Guide to Life." It covers everything from poker tips to hiring and firing. (I've even caught a few of the men@tripod sneaking a peek at this book.)

Tripod Insider

This week, Tripod welcomes another new employee to the Tripod Team. Christina Simmons joins Tripod as a Membership Assistant to help service the growing Tripod membership. On her second day on the job, Christina showed up bright and early, and brought a box of doughnuts for the office. She obviously knows that the key to a Tripodian's heart is through the stomach.

The Tripod volleyball team, however, is still looking for the key to victory. Playoffs have begun and Team Tripod is determined to redeem ourselves after our lackluster regular season performance (we finished in last place). Sporting brand new Tripod T-shirts, Anthony, Mike, Nate, Matt and I dominated our first match. Unfortunately our newfound success did not last and we lost our second match to a bigger, louder, more obnoxious team, despite the support of our faithful fans. The playoffs are double elimination so we have one last chance to find that winning form.

Back in the office, I've discovered that "tech" is a drug. It's fitting that Jon, our tech connection, wears a beeper for "emergencies." Minor server problems forced me to call him early Tuesday after we were flooded with email from members who just HAD to have their homepages. Later in the week, I kept bothering Jeff for my tech fix: "I have to have that script...I really need it ...just a little CGI...come on, just this once." I'm trying to quit, but I don't know if I can deal without a UNIX account.
