The best way to find out about new places on the Web is to take advice from a friend. We don't really have friends, so we thought we'd share our favorite Web discoveries with you. We publish new picks on the 1st and the 15th of each month. Check our archive for past staff picks.

With all the weddings that occur in the autumn, be sure to check out the Macarena How-To page, complete with an animated diagram to help even the most left-footed line-dancer.

Enter Magazine: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

If you missed the Trainspotting hype, then you probably think O.J.'s just a juice. Well, there's a new game in town and it's called Train Hopping. Well, it's not that new: migrant workers and immigrants have been hopping freight trains for years, but this site is for the new kind of train hopper: the adventurer. Discover the best places to hop, what supplies you'll need, and the basics of train hopping slang. An unlikely vacation, to be sure, but you never know when you might have to hop a freight train to Georgia.

Think you know who the next president is going to be? Always wanted to dabble in the futures markets? At the Iowa Electronic Markets you'll find politics the way it was meant to be played: a real-time, real-cash futures market based on the upcoming elections. There's $500 cap on investment, but other than that it's no-holds-barred. More impressive, it's run by the University of Iowa College of Business Administration, and it's legal!

The WWW Speedtrap Registry would have been a wonderful thing to read before I was pulled over last week. Fortunately, the paperwork involved in ticketing a guy who works in Williamstown, lives in North Adams, has a New York license, and is driving a car registered in North Carolina convinced the officer to look the other way. Oh, yes, the Speedtrap Registry "is not a tool to undercut the efforts of law enforcement." Yeah, right.

Why not check into Comedy Central's Indecision '96 site? Good humor, plus a Political Speech Mad-Lib called Spew! Just think, if this automaton had been around 30 years ago, Pat Buchanan would still be writing pro-labor articles for Midwestern newspapers. Sometimes technology just doesn't move fast enough.

As for Tripod, here's my facsimile for Remember the Vote. You've got a week to register for national elections, so get out there!

The Fray: Here's a nice personal start to a promising web zine, with some pretty good Hotwired news thrown in besides.

The truth is, I've been doing most of my browsing on Netscape's Developer Site. Aw, come on, rewriting the basic functionality of the Netscape Enterprise Server isn't too heinous... Join me!

The FAQ Finder: This terrific site is a great compilation of links to Web-based FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). From questions about ferrets to queries about PGP encryption, this hierarchical list of links is a great place to begin your research. And it was built by a Tripod member - who woulda thunk it?

I was one of those dirt-poor types in college, and there were entire weeks when I survived on ramen noodles. What an amazing and peculiar food -- a buck for five packs, each with a brick of dried noodles and an ultra-salty "flavor packet" to keep that circulation pumping through all-night study sessions. Now Nissin Foods has created an entire Ramen Noodle Page with eye-catching graphics, the fabled history of everybody's favorite nineteen cent noodle soup, and even recipes. Yes, recipes -- Salmon Ramen with Fresh Vegetables, Ramen Chicken Noodle Strudel, Ramen Spinach Salad Supreme, Ramen Pizza and Ramen Earth & Turf Salad among them. If any of that has your taste buds quivering in anticipation, you're a braver person than I -- and sure to enjoy this fun and slightly silly site.

PTs Cafe: Admittedly, I am the bane of coffee drinkers - or so I've been told. I like my morning cup of (brace yourself) decaf to taste like melted coffee ice cream in a cup, and apply enough cream and sugar to effectively meet that goal. This site, however, is any coffee lover's dream - even mine! Jeff, from this java house, is a member of Tripod, and sent one of the kindest, sweetest e-mails ever to cross my desktop. He also sent a generous sampling of his favorite brews - wottaguy! Here's to you, Jeff - hope all Topekan Tripodians take note of this referral!
