What to get for that favorite person who has everything? Or perhaps that not-so-favorite person who should really be getting coal in their stocking? Endangered Feces offers gift packs of
fossilized animal droppings, from dinosaurs and their cretaceous
companions... The site claims that "All endangered feces products are gift-wrapped and carry our unconditional guarantee." Hmmm...

I love Christmas... and I love seeing the season shine through my computer
monitor. Santa Claus at claus.com is a
cute place to start, for all you true believers... find out how you rate in
the "Naughty or Nice" archives, check out some tasty recipes in Mrs.
Claus's kitchen, and drop Santa an e-mail at the post office. Those of you
who are more fact-oriented are sure to love The North Pole Weather Report. My
most favorite holiday sites, though, are these two: We've Found Santa, a site dedicated to a
California author who's taken it upon himself to be Santa to children
in need, answering their letters and publishing three books on the subject,
and a site dedicated to the Random Acts of Kindness and
Senseless Acts of Beauty revolution that's sweeping several continents as we
speak. In this season of goodwill, visit these sites and consider how you
can make the Season of Giving last all year long. Happy Holidays to all!

MusicNet -- Shockwave with Streaming Audio is my favorite plug-in thus far,
hands down. And MusicNet does a beautiful job of using this new technology
to showcase new music titles. Once you become a member of the service, you
can review three new titles a week in each of ten genres. A review includes
information on the album, track listings and three extremely high-quality
sound clips. Don't even go there if you're not running Netscape or Explorer
3.0 and the latest shockwave.

Tyrone at Hawaii.edu's oeuvre to Michelle Khan covers all the bases on the Hong
Kong film star, kick-ass girl martial artist extraordinaire: a complete history, a list of film credits, and Quicktime video clips. Personally, I think Khan is worth the download. In a linked interview, Salon mag calls her:
"Lithe, ferocious, awesome." Although an injury on the set of her latest movie may force Ms. Khan to take another break, we'll always have the out-takes that
roll during the credits to Supercop (her project with Jackie Chan).
In the film, she rides a dirt bike onto a speeding train. In the out-takes,
you see her miss and go flying over the top, twice. Once again, proof that courage ain't got nothin' to do with cajones.

Home of Space Monkey and Mr. Lunch --
J. Otto makes the best pictures. His illustration style translates well
through the wires and cables, it will make your monitor smile. Take a look,
poke around, enjoy.

When I was just a wee lad, I used to haunt the halls of The Franklin Institute
in Philadelphia. I still love this Science Museum. The most popular
attractions are the giant walk-through beating heart and the Rube
Goldberg-esque pinball machine, but my favorite was always the
fourth floor: an entire gallery of finely detailed ship models. The
Institute now has a great Web site, one that would make Ben Franklin
proud. Take a look.

Paula Borsook's
Unofficial Homepage is certainly not eye candy, but it's quite an
introduction to a woman who calls herself "Wired's only regular
feminist/humanist/luddite/skeptic contributor." She's intelligent and
hilarious and she's made both Wired and Hotwired squirm in their knickers
enough times to win me over.

As winter approached here at Tripod (or as I like to call it, the Facial Hair Club for Men) it was a no-brainer for me to morph my sleek goatee into a wooly beard. Hey, you gotta stay warm, right? But the question that no one's ever asked is, "does this really work?" No one until now, that is. Some guy from Canada shaved off half his beard in the name of science to test the theory. Check it out -- he came up with some interesting results.

I have been taking every chance I get to browse through The Photographs of David
Seymour. This well-chosen selection covers the tumultous years of the
mid-20th century, and Seymour's camera captures beautifully everything
from a world at war to the emergence of Israel to a luminous Ingrid Bergen
playing with her children at home. The text is well-written and
informative, but I must admit I go to this site for the purty pictures.

Ever since I saw the movie "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey" last year, I have been semi-obsessed with
this instrument. Invented in 1919 by the Russian-born Leon Theremin
(1896-1993), this original electronic instrument seems to be simply a box
with two oscillators (one oscillates at a fixed pitch, the other varies),
two antennae, and an amplifier. By waving your hands near the antennae, you
can control the pitch and volume of the Theremin -- and a weird,
otherworldy electronic sound is produced. At last! an instrument that even
I can play, and one weird enough to appeal to my twisted idea of what
constitutes "good" music. As it turns out, there are plenty of Theremin
sites on the Web, the most obsessive of which is the aptly-titled Theremin
Home Page, which includes profiles of
various Theremin "virtuosos"; info on where to buy Theremins or how to
build them yourself; exhaustive lists of records, movies and books which
feature Theremins; a photo gallery; and just about everything else your
heart could desire. You might also want to check out the Leon Theremin page, which lovingly recounts the strange life of the Theremin's inventor, and also includes plenty of links to related Web sites.

Are you a Psycho? Take Dr. Psycho's Multiscale Psycho Inventory and confirm whether those rumors around the office are true. Also, I'm addicted to Swoon for the daily horoscope, but it's got great gossip and unusual surveys too. Why buy these four major men's and women's magazines (Details, Mademoiselle, GQ, and Glamour) when you've got their best articles right here online?

The Happy
Herp Page is a Tripod member page devoted to herpetology. It's a great
example of what a few good links can do for a very specific interest group.
Well done!
