from tripod..with love..

From Mike Agger, Special Projects Manager :

Last weekend, I was driving down to a friend's wedding in Reading, Pennsylvania, listening to NPR. "Fresh Air" did a great segment on the history of the haiku, one of the world's oldest art forms. Inspired by the ancient haiku masters, I offer here a collection of New Media Haikus. The references might be a bit obtuse so I've provided some explanatory text. Enjoy.

White Boards

Strong smell of marker,
Fumes, writing words, feeling high,
Time to sit down, yes.

(The Tripod office is littered with white boards. Whenever we want to get organized, we write lots of words on them).

Tech Suite

Massage the data
Or else it will migrate south,
Still parsing that one.

(The Tech Suite is definitely a frontier of language creation. I like to hang out there when I am feeling unwired).

Snail Mail

What are those boxes
On the corner painted blue?
Mailing paper, fool.

(On Spring Street the other day, I momentarily forgot the function of mailboxes.)

Memospeak

Win win bullet points
What will they impact upon?
Co-brand my soul please.

(Since becoming Special Projects Manager, I have been writing a lot more memos.)

Hacking

Again a bad hack.
With fantastically large shoes
I would rock the lot.

(I like to play hacky-sack in the parking lot, but unfortunately I am usually the weak link.)

Chef's Hat

Camouflaged grease
Makes my stomach churn daily,
Let's go back again.

(Chef's Hat is a friendly diner on the road to Vermont. The food has lots of "character." We eat there often.)

Bass Pond

Big fish lurking low,
Should I use the Purple Worm?
Damn, Nico hooks one.

(Our producer, Scott Walker, has a great bass pond out by his house. Every time I go fishing there, his young son Nico pulls out a big lunker from the bottom.)

Well, it's a good thing I don't have to support myself by writing haikus. Thanks for reading.

Later,
Mike (11/8/96)
