Loser:
Dick Lamm (Reform)
Major Loss:
1996 race for the Reform Party
Presidential nomination.
Opponent:
Ross Perot
Is there a perfect book to read after a defeat?
Manchester's biography of Churchill. It reminds one that it's important to
stick to your convictions even if you lose. I would rather be a
historically
correct loser than a false winner.
If you visited Ross Perot 's house on the day after his impending defeat,
what gift would you give him to cheer him up?
Thomas Jefferson's autobiography. In 1796 John Adams was elected
president on the Federalist ticket. Four years later when Jefferson was
elected there was no more Federalist party. I don't think Ross Perot is a
Thomas Jefferson, but Perot is a haunting combination of someone
perceptive enough to recognize that America needs to reform its politics,
but egotistical enough to stand in its way. If he is defeated - and he will
be - I would like him to understand that he's on the right track and that he
could be better known as the father of a new political party than just
another president.
