What advice can you offer defeated candidates?
Don't take it personally - especially when you're outspent four to one as I
was. Today's campaigns are so much about money, when they should be
about issues.
What book should candidates curl up with after a tough election?
Anything inspirational. Personally, I'm fond of "The Power of the Plus
Factor" by Reverend Norman Vincent Peale, who was a friend of my father.
When Reverend Peale heard that I wanted to enter public service, he told
me to 'shoot for the moon because even if you miss you still end up with the
stars.'
