Tripod: What do you think is the most pressing issue in the world of contraception today?

The most pressing issue is the fact that it's not advertised on TV, prime time TV, not talked about enough, and not given to sexually active teenagers freely in the school system. Which I think it should be. Being a mother myself, I should definitely educate my son -- well, he knows all about condoms now, all about safe sex, and he's 10 years old, and as soon as they ask questions I think they're ready to know. So he shall be educated and provided with condoms when he's sexually active. When he's ready to be.

Probably just getting people to realize that there is more than one method, and getting people to use them. I'm mostly involved in HIV-prevention activities. Getting people to realize that condoms are a good idea, and that there are other barrier methods out there as well.

Susan Yates
Gynecologist

I that probably the most pressing issue would be to find contraceptive choices that are effective, with low side effects, and easy for couples to use, but, at the same time, protect couples against the transmission of STDs.

Sexually transmitted diseases, probably.

Personally, for me, it's how much a burden it is for the woman rather than for the man. How can contraception be balanced out for both sexes, rather than mostly put on as a burden for the woman?

Michael Franz, Gay Male

Well, there's two huge issues at hand. I think safe sex is one, and stopping the spread of AIDS, and the second one is overpopulation of the earth. I generally think people have to start taking responsibility in both areas. Have to take responsibility for the spread of AIDS. Have to start taking responsibility for their health and the health of their lovers and the people that they're encountering. I think that people have to take responsibility for the earth and the fact that we're destroying the earth by having too many people on it. We have to start looking at cutting down the population so that the human race can continue.
