The Berkeley Guides:
Great Britain and Northern Ireland:
The South
By Mylah de la Rosa
The South of England is like London's plump, rich, self-satisfied old mother-in-law. It is the wealthiest, most resented region in all of England, as well as the most conservative. Even with the Tories losing a significant number of seats in the last local elections, most inhabitants of the area are quick to dismiss this liberal shift as more of a phase than a significant trend. Luckily, as a traveler you won't really feel the area's stuffiness, apart from the occasional snobbish attitudes of B&B proprietors who discourage backpackers from staying in their homes. Moreover, the general wealth of the region--coupled with its proximity to London--does ensure that any revolution in English pop culture will soon make its way down to the (sometimes) sunny South.
