General building tips
Welcome to the classroom.tripod.com demo!
Bringing the Internet into the classroom
is a phenomenon that is quickly growing, and will continue well into the future.
The Web is not just a fad, nor is it only for booming start-ups. It is a rich and
useful medium for both teachers and students. That's why Tripod has put
together a Web page-building site just for them!
We hope our Tripod tools will give wings to the imaginations of students and
teachers alike. Building class pages and surfing the Web for helpful research
information are only two of the endless uses of the Internet made possible with
classroom.tripod.com. The following demo will show you what you need to know
to use these building tools, and what you can do once you master them.
Happy building!
What you will need to get started
In order to take full advantage of all that classroom.tripod.com offers, you must
have access to the Internet, a functioning Web browser (preferably 4.0 or higher),
an e-mail address (get one free from MailCity), and
some knowledge of the Web. An interest in Web-page building and a desire to
share the knowledge with your students are also good things to have, though not
one bit of HTML coding is required!

Signing up
To get started, first you need to sign up with
Tripod - it's easy, FREE, and we promise
not to send you spam. It is possible to
sign up for a group account; for instance,
for an entire class to have the same
membership. The one good thing about
sign-up is that you only have to do it the first
time you visit classroom.tripod.com. Once
you sign up, you're in. All you have to do
when you want to come back is log in - just enter your member name
and password.
Once you've signed up or logged in, it's time to start building your Web page.
We also ask for some additional information about your school. You don't have
to fill any of it in if you don't want to - we respect your privacy. This
information will ultimately be used to help other teachers and students find the
pages they are looking for in our classroom.tripod.com directory.
Along those same lines, we provide the ability to privatize all of the pages that you
and your students build with classroom.tripod.com. When we say "privatize,"
we mean that you can restrict the access to your pages by creating a list
of people that are allowed to view them. The list can be made up of whomever
you like, for example, parents, or students and teachers in other classes
and schools. We discourage the publishing of personal information (including full
name, phone number, and address) on any Web page. This is the World Wide
Web, and everyone on it has access to pages that are not privatized. This is
just a reminder that it is always important to protect your privacy on the Web.

Get building
Once you're signed up and ready to
build, you'll be brought to a page with
two options - one for teachers and
another for students. Click on the
appropriate button, and you'll find
three choices for Web-page building:
For beginners, intermediates, and
advanced builders. We've given the
builders catchier names, but they
pretty much fit into those three
categories.
Teacher tools
Teachers can choose from the Classpage Builder, Communication Builder, and
Continuing Ed. Knowledge of HTML is not necessary to use the Classpage and
Communication builders.
The Classpage Builder is a basic builder that lends
itself to Web pages about a single topic the main
page for a class, a specific school lesson, or perhaps a
field trip.
Here's a page about a middle-school class. They use
the list of links to connect with other pages created by
students in the class. The Classpage Builder is
perfect for a central introductory page that will show
links to other related pages.
|
The Communication Builder is all about communication.
It allows you to put a message board and a chat room on
your page to facilitate getting in touch with other teachers,
other students, or parents. When you decide to put a
message board or chat room on your page, you have
control over
the topics discussed. However, only when you privatize
your page
will you have control over the people who can participate in
your chat or message board.
This Communication page was used by a class studying
French in the States to
make contact with a class in France. By including a
message board and chat
on the page, the students can exchange ideas, stories, and
even grammar tips! (image default builder)
Continuing Ed. will bring you to Tripod's Homepage Studio where you can use
our Freeform Editor to write your own HTML code.

Student tools
Students can choose from the Junior
Builder, Senior Builder, and Graduate
Track. The Junior and Senior builders
are very similar. Knowledge of HTML
is not needed to build with either of
them.
The Senior Builder is an expanded
version of the Junior Builder. For
example, students can put two images
on their page instead of one, two
paragraphs of text instead of one, and add news and weather Info Flashes.
The Junior Builder is ideal for small projects, perhaps a book report or small
science project. The Senior Builder is more suited for larger, more extensive
reports and projects.
Here's an example of the Senior Builder being used
to create a page about acid rain for an Environmental
Science class project.
The Graduate Track will take students to Tripod's
Homepage Studio where they can use our Freeform
Editor to write their own HTML code.
General building tips:
If you are confused at any time while building,
find the closest Help link, and you'll be taken to a
quicktour with step-by-step instructions for the
builder you are using. There, you can find the
answers to all of your questions! You'll also find a
glossary in the Help section. It may be useful to
you and your students who are not familiar with
Tripod's Web page-building tools.
By clicking "preview" in a builder, a new window
will pop up showing you what your page looks like
so far. It's a great way to make sure your page is
turning out the way you want. You'll be prompted
to save your page before you can preview it
always a good thing! If your page does not look
right, you can always go back and edit it.
When you're happy with the way your page looks, just click "done," and you're
done! The next page you'll see will have the URL for your newly built page.
This is also the place where you can find out how to privatize your page.
